A brilliant spring-like day and 42 members turned out to compete in our Members Pairs three round snake competition. Once the ever so slow secretary had carried out the mystery draw for partners all was revealed to the anxiously waiting folk on the terrain. Partners found and it was then down to claiming a piste to play on and the action began. For those keen eyed readers who noted that 42 forms 21 pairs so a pair might be expected to have a bye each round, our master plan involved having two triple teams as a couple of members had to leave after two games. Nevertheless we got through the three rounds and I hope folk enjoyed the games. Of the twenty teams playing just four managed to achieve the ideal three wins. Three wins with plus 15 points gained Cath Clegg and Colin Child fourth place. Chris Hopkin and Georgie Fitton with some temporary help from Peter Wharton gained three wins and plus 17 points for an excellent third place. Not to be outdone by his talented spouse, Ian Fitton with Clive McCulloch for two games and Kath Westley for the third game took second place with three wins and plus 23 points. However the top spot went to Roger Farrar and Stuart Bolton with three wins and plus 25 points. Sadly Stuart was still running his lap of honour round the terrain and so missed the presentation photo. The one above is of Stuart when he was in our youth squad a while ago. Roger, meanwhile, is beaming with delight at the thought of having two trophies on the mantelpiece. Well done to the champions and everyone for making the day an enjoyable one. Full results can be seen on our RESULTS PAGE of this blog.
We were also pleased to see David Giles and his partner, Jessica, call by to introduce themselves and have a game with us. David is a member of Great Yarmouth Petanque club and hopefully one day they will visit with a group of members for a social petanque event.
Also it is good to report that we were visited by a group of 23 youngsters from Field Lane J I and Nursery School in Batley and Heckmondwike Primary School who all came for a petanque taster session. It seems to have been enjoyable as they want to come again and other schools have also expressed an interest in joining in. A great big thankyou to Kirklees Council guys for facilitating the day. When we get approval we hope to show a few pictures soon.
