April’s Month End Melee saw 37 members take to the terrain attempting to add some points to their tallies. As usual early successes were promptly followed by third round failures. Twelve players went into the final round with two wins and keen to make it the perfect three from three. Sadly four failed to get the magic win and perhaps even more disappointing our current points system only pays out to the top seven players. This meant that one member won all three games but failed on points difference to add to their points tally. The price for such a shameful scoring system will be paid for a long time – I’m finding. Congratulations to the eight players who won three. The month’s runner up was  Dennis Crisp with a fine 3 wins and plus 31 points. This score would have won most month end melees but it was surpassed in fine style by Ian Fitton who took the honours with 3 wins and plus 33 points.

The West Yorkshire League got started in the last week. We played our first fixture at home to Huddersfield and our team of Roger Farrar, Gordon Walsworth, Stuart Bolton, Colin Child, Kath and Clive Westley were in fine form winning both Triples and all three Pairs games to record a 5-0 victory. An excellent performance by our players but obviously not good enough as the team selectors dropped four players for the visit to Mirfield this Monday. Ian Fitton made his team debut and was brilliantly supported by Alma and Roger Johnson, Jane Farrar, Stuart Bolton and Colin Child. The team played some excellent petanque to record a fine 4-1 victory. The selectors will now have a headache formulating our team to welcome Harrogate to Heckmondwike on Wednesday next week as there are other players clicking their boules and looking for their chance to represent us.

For those that fancy a trip to play even more petanque there are four BRONZE events coming up over the next two or three weeks. Bronze events are open to everyone – not just EPA/Northern registered players.

On Sunday 6th May Brandsburton hold an Open Pairs event.

On Monday 7th May Stockton Fox hold their Memorial Pairs competition.

On Sunday 13th May Bridlington hold an Open Triples competition.

On Wednesday 16th May Stockton Fox hold an Open Melee.

All of these clubs are very hospitable, have interesting terrains and you can be assured of a good day of petanque. Anyone interested in trying one or all of the above events and wants more info or help with entering please let me know ASAP.
